Michigan State +14½ -110 over UCLA

3:30 PM EST. In August, if you'd offered odds on UCLA being the Big Ten's only undefeated team in late October, you'd have needed a calculator with a lot of zeroes. The Bruins went 3-9 last year. Now they're 6-0, 4-0 in the conference, ranked in the top 10, and 5-0-1 against the spread — and that last number is precisely the problem. Nobody stays perfect against the number. The spread exists to catch up to teams exactly like this one, and it catches up by inflating the price a little more every week until the market is asking them to do things they were never built to do. Asking UCLA to win a conference game by more than two touchdowns is one of those things, and the reason is standing right there in the Bruins' own last two box scores: 17 points against Oregon, 17 points against Wisconsin.

That is the UCLA offense since Nico Iamaleava's season ended with a knee injury. To his credit, Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach has managed the situation about as well as anyone could ask — he finished the win at Oregon and went 22-of-33 for 264 yards against the Badgers — but managed is the operative word. This is no longer the attack that was averaging 35 points a game with its five-star quarterback. It's a run-first grinder leaning on Wayne Knight and Anthony Woods and a genuinely excellent defense, winning rock fights 17-15 and 17-7. Grinders cover a lot of numbers. What grinders do not do reliably is hang margin. Laying 14½ with a backup quarterback and an offense that has produced 34 points in two weeks means you need the defense to pitch something close to a shutout, because the offense isn't giving you any cushion at all.

Now the part where we hold our nose, because Michigan State's situation is ugly and the price knows it. The Spartans are 2-5, losers of five straight, making a cross-country trip to the Rose Bowl, and their availability report reads like a phone book: top rusher Cam Edwards has been out since September, quarterback Alessio Milivojevic is questionable — and if he can't go, the backup is a freshman whose entire college résumé is 11 snaps at the end of a blowout — and the secondary is missing three starters. All of that is real. It's also all in the number. What else is in the recent tape, if you look past the record, is a team that has quietly started scoring: 58 points over its last two games after managing 26 in the previous three losses combined, and a 24-21 loss to Northwestern last week that came down to the final drive. Sparty doesn't need to be good on Saturday. Sparty needs to be within two touchdowns of a team that hasn't scored three touchdowns in a game in two weeks.

UCLA probably wins this game — the Bruins are at home, their defense forces turnovers in bunches, and their season has been one long magic trick under Bob Chesney. We're not betting against the magic trick. We're betting against the margin, because that's what the market is actually selling: an undefeated, top-10, perfect-against-the-spread team laying the biggest number of its season with its backup quarterback, against a desperate team catching it right before a bye. You may cash a UCLA ticket on Saturday. You'll just be doing it at the very top of the market, paying full retail for the best story in the conference. We'll take the ugly dog and the two touchdowns plus the hook.
