South Carolina -2½ -110 over Tennessee
3:30 PM EST. Let's give Tennessee its flowers first, because what the Vols did to Alabama last Saturday was not a win, it was a dismantling. The No. 6 team in the country walked into Neyland and got held to 201 total yards, 54 on the ground, turned it over four times and never scored a point in the second half of a 26-10 loss. That's three straight wins for Tennessee since the Texas loss, a defense allowing 14.7 points a game, and a team now sitting on the doorstep of the Top 10 with playoff talk starting up in Knoxville. It is also exactly the recipe for an upset. You do not get to stay at that emotional peak, and you especially do not get to stay there when the next Saturday sends you on the road in this conference.
This season has already shown us how that movie ends, twice, in this very league. Ole Miss beat LSU in a massive home win, then traveled to Gainesville the following week and lost to Florida by 24. Florida rode that win straight onto the road at Missouri and lost by 28. Big win at home, bus ride, flat performance. It has been the SEC's most reliable pattern all fall. And if Tennessee needs a more personal reminder, it has one: the last time the Vols brought a top-five ranking and playoff dreams into Williams-Brice Stadium, in 2022, South Carolina hung 63 points on them as a 21½-point underdog and ended their season on the spot. Josh Heupel walked into his own facility Monday carrying a picture of Carolina's fans storming the field that night. He knows what's waiting. Knowing and avoiding it are two different things.
The football underneath the spot is better than most people realize, too. South Carolina is rested off its bye after going into the Swamp and embarrassing Florida 38-19, a game where LaNorris Sellers accounted for five touchdowns. On the season the Gamecocks actually out-produce Tennessee, 37.7 points and 475 yards a game, and they lead the SEC in rushing at more than 230 yards a night. Matt Fuller runs it at six yards a carry, and Sellers is the second-leading rusher in the conference at his position with 411 yards to go with 1,338 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions. This offense runs through contact as well as any in America, and finishing tackles at first contact has not been Tennessee's strength. We fully respect what Jim Knowles has done with that Vols defense, but this is a different animal than a pocket passer standing still for them.
The honest wart on South Carolina is that it's 1-3 in the league because it cannot hold a second-half lead. The Gamecocks were up 16-0 on Mississippi State and 17-0 on Kentucky and lost both games. That's the risk here, and it's exactly why a rested home team with the better offense is laying only 2½ instead of a touchdown. That risk is in the price. What's also in the price is a Tennessee team being asked to reproduce the game of its season, on the road, seven days later, in the loudest trap in the conference. We'll lay the short number with the home team.
