Aaron Nola (RHP – Philadelphia) – 5.61 ERA

6:40 PM EST. Aaron Nola (RHP – Philadelphia Phillies) enters this matchup in difficult form, with the underlying metrics offering little encouragement. His elevated xERA remains well above league average, matching the struggles shown by his 5.61 ERA. Nola continues to generate strikeouts at a respectable rate with a K/9 around 9.0, though the effectiveness has been offset by a sharp increase in home runs allowed. Over his last nine starts he has surrendered 15 home runs, a trend that has consistently erased the value of his swing-and-miss ability. His BB/9 has remained solid at roughly 2.2, though the combination of hard contact and long balls has driven up his run prevention numbers.

The recent game log has been especially concerning. Each of his last two outings produced a PQS-DIS, continuing a stretch where quality contact against him has outweighed his strikeout production. At Citizens Bank Park, the numbers have been particularly troubling. Through 10 home starts, Nola owns an 0-4 record with a 6.70 ERA and 1.67 WHIP across 50 innings, illustrating persistent traffic on the bases and an inability to limit damage in his home environment. His first meeting with Washington this season resulted in a PQS-2, another indication that the Nationals have already produced competitive at-bats against him.

Washington's starting pitcher remains to be announced, placing additional emphasis on the offensive matchup. The Nationals have been one of the more productive road offenses this season, averaging 5.5 runs per game with a .765 OPS away from home. That consistent road production lines up well against a Philadelphia starter whose xERA and home results continue trending in the wrong direction. Washington's ability to string together quality plate appearances has the potential to capitalize on Nola's ongoing home run issues and elevated WHIP.

Nola's current form has been defined by elevated xERA, consistent hard contact, and an alarming home run rate, while his strikeout and walk numbers have not been enough to overcome the damage. Combined with Washington's strong road offensive profile and Nola's winless record at home, the Nationals have a strong statistical case to win this game by multiple runs. Plus ridiculous money! Vegas doesn’t care who starting for Washington so why should we.
