Arizona -1½ +100 over Colorado
3:10 PM EST. Michael Soroka (RHP - ARI) was cruising through his first five starts of the season, allowing just eight combined earned runs, before one ugly outing in Milwaukee on April 30 inflated the overall numbers. Outside of that disaster, Soroka has quietly looked like a pitcher rediscovering his form, posting a sub-2.50 ERA and WHIP south of 1.20 in every other start combined. More importantly, the underlying skills back up the rebound. His walk rate remains sharp at just 6%, his strike percentage has improved considerably, and the strikeout rate has climbed into legitimate swing-and-miss territory at 25%. At age 28, Soroka suddenly looks much closer to the high-end starter he once projected to become before injuries derailed his career.
Michael Lorenzen (RHP - COL) is a much different story. Lorenzen teased improvement during the second half of last season after returning from an oblique injury, showing temporary spikes in strikeouts and command that suggested there might still be something left in the tank. However, expecting those gains to hold long term for a 33-year-old journeyman with declining velocity was always dangerous. This season has been a reminder why. Lorenzen has made nine starts and only one of them could reasonably be classified as quality. He enters with a bloated 6.55 ERA and an expected ERA sitting near 5.00, while the swing-and-miss profile remains extremely weak with a whiff rate under 10%.
That becomes a major problem in this environment. This park is one of the better offensive settings in baseball, where contact-heavy pitchers can get buried quickly once traffic starts building. Oddsmakers clearly expect offense with a total sitting at 10½ and shaded heavily to the over, but the matchup strongly suggests Arizona is the side far more likely to do the damage. Soroka brings the better command, the better swing-and-miss arsenal, and the far more trustworthy current form, while Lorenzen continues to profile like a pitcher living on borrowed time in a brutal setting for vulnerable arms.
