Detroit +130 over NY Mets
7:10 PM EST. Jack Flaherty Jack Flaherty (RHP - DET) hasn’t put up pretty surface numbers yet with a 5.56 ERA through eight starts, but there are signs he’s throwing much better than that number suggests. Flaherty still owns elite swing-and-miss stuff, striking out 42 batters in just 34 innings while averaging over 11 strikeouts per nine innings. The biggest issue has been command, as the walks have inflated both his ERA and WHIP, but this is still a veteran arm capable of dominating lineups when he gets ahead in counts. Detroit is also catching value because the market is reacting heavily to the ERA while ignoring that Flaherty’s strikeout profile remains among the best in the American League.
Freddy Peralta Freddy Peralta (RHP - NYM) has pitched well overall with a 3.12 ERA and 43 strikeouts across 43.1 innings, but the Mets continue to struggle badly behind him because the offense has disappeared for long stretches. New York has consistently failed to provide run support and that has turned several quality Peralta outings into losses or no-decisions. Detroit actually enters this matchup in the better current offensive rhythm and the Tigers lineup has quietly been more productive than the Mets for much of the season. Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson continue to generate power while Detroit’s young bats are starting to produce more consistently against right-handed pitching.
Detroit as a road underdog because this price is built almost entirely around the starting pitching matchup and not the way these teams are currently playing. The Mets have dropped games repeatedly despite strong pitching efforts and continue to rank near the bottom of the league offensively. Meanwhile, Detroit has been far more competitive than its record indicates and has already shown the ability to win low-scoring games behind power pitching. Flaherty’s strikeout upside gives the Tigers a ceiling edge in a one-game spot and if he limits the walks, Detroit absolutely has enough offense to steal this game outright. At plus money, the Tigers are the side worth backing.
