8:00 PM EST. Carolina has been excellent throughout these playoffs, but context matters. The Hurricanes' path to the Stanley Cup Final has been remarkably soft. They dispatched Ottawa, Philadelphia, and Montreal, and while all three deserve credit for getting this far, none profile as elite contenders. Montreal was riding a red-hot goaltender and a mountain of good fortune before Carolina exposed them. Philadelphia and Ottawa were respectable teams, but neither was viewed as a legitimate championship threat. Carolina dominated the competition in front of them, but it is fair to question whether they have been tested by a true heavyweight yet.

Vegas has. The Golden Knights steamrolled Colorado, a team many considered the most dangerous club in the playoffs before the postseason began. Injuries or not, Colorado still had plenty of firepower and Vegas handled them with authority. They followed that up by eliminating a strong Anaheim team, proving that their run is no fluke. This is a battle-tested group with scoring throughout the lineup and enough skill to pressure Carolina in ways the Hurricanes simply have not experienced during this playoff run.

Frederik Andersen has posted excellent numbers, but he has not faced an offense with the depth, finishing ability, and relentless pressure that Vegas brings. The Golden Knights have legitimate snipers who can capitalize on mistakes, and they are fully capable of pushing possession closer to even than Carolina's previous opponents managed. We are not interested in making grand predictions about who wins the series. Hockey remains the most volatile of the major sports and playoff outcomes often swing on a bounce, a deflection, or a hot goaltender. What interests us is the price. Carolina is being treated like an overwhelming favorite despite having faced nobody close to Vegas' caliber. The Golden Knights are not stepping up in class here.
