Anaheim -½ +220 over Vegas (regulation)

NHL Playoff Series Game 5

Series Tied 2-2

9:30 PM EST. (Regulation only). The longer this series goes, the better it is for Anaheim. The Ducks are young, hungry, fresh, and fast, and through four games they have been the better team in this series. Not once. Not twice. In all four games.

If you look beyond the scoreboard and actually study the underlying metrics, the proof is sitting right there in plain sight.

Anaheim’s puck possession time in the offensive zone during 5-on-5 play is currently second among all remaining playoff teams. Second. The only team ahead of them is Carolina, who is 8-0 after playing Ottawa and Philadelphia, hardly murderers’ row. Anaheim has already gone through Edmonton and now Vegas while continuing to dominate territorial play.

Vegas, meanwhile, continues to be priced almost entirely on reputation and pedigree.

If Vegas is -150 at home, then Anaheim should be roughly the same price at home considering how this series has actually played out. But that’s not happening. Anaheim has been sitting around -110 at home while Vegas continues to command inflated pricing in their own building despite getting consistently outplayed.

That’s market perception versus on-ice reality.

Vegas has not looked like the better team at any point in this series. They continue getting beaten to loose pucks, losing possession battles, and spending far too much time defending. But the betting market loves teams with Stanley Cup pedigree and recognizable names, while Anaheim still carries the reputation of a rebuilding team that missed the playoffs for years.

That creates value.

The market also reacts almost entirely to scoreboards. Friday night is the perfect example. Vegas won 6-2 and the entire hockey world immediately concluded the Golden Knights dominated the game. They absolutely did not. Anaheim arguably played its best game of the postseason but got sunk by dreadful goaltending that couldn’t stop anything. If you watched only the final score, you came away with the wrong conclusion entirely.

That’s exactly how NHL betting markets become inefficient.

Even media members fall into the trap. Scott Seidenberg on VSiN was talking afterward about how Vegas “disposed of” Anaheim and how dominant the Knights were. That’s the problem. People see a final score and assume the better team won convincingly without understanding how the game was actually played.

Anaheim has been the dominant team in this series. Hello?
