7:07 PM ET. OT included. Washington beat the Kings 2-1 on Monday, but that win came wrapped in warning labels. They were outplayed for long stretches, propped up by Charlie Lindgren and opportunism. The Caps aren’t “back.” They’re relieved. That’s a very different thing. Relief doesn’t travel into the next game when your structural issues remain: slow breakouts, limited secondary scoring, and a penalty kill that’s been dying by a thousand backdoor tap-ins.

Edmonton rolls in licking wounds after a 5-1 loss in Buffalo — but that’s precisely the time to buy low. The Oilers were flat, no argument there, but their actual profile remains far more dangerous than the final score suggests. Jack Roslovic has been a revelation. Leon Draisaitl is heating up. And Connor McDavid — who had his point streak snapped only because he was face-planted into the boards — is not staying quiet for long.

The Oilers’ metrics still scream progression. Their controlled zone entries, their expected goal share, their power-play chance creation… these are all top-tier even when the results aren’t. Washington’s metrics scream regression. They have been outshot, out-chanced, and out-possessed for weeks. You do not sustain results when you spend half your night blocking shots and the other half chipping pucks off glass.

Meanwhile, Edmonton’s biggest flaw this year — depth contributions — is actually trending upward. Roslovic is dragging his line into relevance. Podkolzin is showing fight. And the Oilers are getting increasingly desperate, which for this roster is usually the turning point, not the breaking point.
