Columbus -½ +135 over Edmonton
OT Included: The Oilers will play their second game in as many nights and their third in four days, while Columbus has been sitting, waiting, and preparing. Edmonton is coming off two straight overtime wins — a 5–4 squeaker over the Blue Jackets themselves and a 2–1 edge over Philadelphia — but this is a misleading “bounce-back” narrative following that humiliating 9–1 loss to Colorado.
Let’s be real: this Edmonton team could just as easily be on a 12-game losing streak. They’ve played seven overtime games in their last twelve, and every single one of those could have gone the other way. The Oilers’ puck-possession numbers are below league average, their goaltending remains a major liability, and their defensive structure is non-existent.
They’re still living off two elite forwards we don’t even need to name — and that’s it. The rest of the roster contributes very little at both ends. When those top players don’t produce multi-point nights, the Oilers have no safety net.
Take a look at the recent stretch:
L 1–9 vs Colorado — total embarrassment, outshot 44–18, booed off the ice.
W 5–4 (OT) vs Columbus — needed extra time against this same opponent despite being rested.
W 2–1 (OT) vs Philadelphia — another grind where they were out-chanced.
L 3–4 (SO) at Dallas, L 2–3 at St. Louis, L 3–4 (OT) vs New York, L 2–3 at Seattle — recurring pattern of late-game collapses.
Even their wins come with red flags. The Oilers have not won in regulation since October 28 (Utah), and that says everything about where this team is mentally and structurally.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets continue to be one of the most under-the-radar teams in the NHL. They rank top-10 in puck possession (Corsi & Fenwick) and top-10 in several key even-strength categories, but because they’ve been irrelevant for a few seasons, the market hasn’t caught up. They’re fast, physical, and relentless on the forecheck — exactly the kind of team that gives a tired, top-heavy opponent fits.
This is not a pushover. The Jackets skate hard, roll four lines, and win more battles than their record suggests. Their advanced metrics support a team that’s far more competitive than public perception.
Columbus has the rest advantage and the matchup edge. Edmonton is fatigued, fragile, and still overvalued because of name recognition. The Oilers are being priced as if they’re one hot streak away from turning the corner but their issues run deeper. Weak goaltending, leaky defense, and heavy minutes for two superstars are not sustainable.
The Jackets should come in confident after taking this same opponent to overtime just days ago, and they’ve been the better five-on-five club all season.
