N.Y. Jets -1½ -110 over Las Vegas
1:00 PM EST. Somebody's losing streak dies in the swamp on Sunday, and we're betting it's the home team's. The NY Jets -1.5 over Las Vegas is not a bet on beauty . This game will not be framed and hung anywhere , it's a bet on the one unit in this matchup that isn't a liability: the Jets' defense. New York allows 21.4 points and 4.9 yards per play, top-ten territory, and it holds teams to touchdowns on 56 percent of red-zone trips. The Raiders allow touchdowns on 78.6 percent of red-zone trips, which is less a defense than a welcome mat with yard lines. Las Vegas gives up 28.1 points and 5.9 yards per play, and when a game inevitably comes down to two or three red-zone stands, one of these teams is built to make them and the other is built to wave politely.
Look at what the Jets actually did last week while losing, because it's the whole argument. They went to Miami, outgained the Dolphins, beat them in yards per play, explosive plays and success rate, and still walked out 28-25 losers, the most Jets sentence ever written, granted, but also a box score screaming that this 2-5 team is better than its record. The kids are coming: Braelon Allen piled up 134 total yards, Omar Cooper Jr. went 5-for-115 with a score, Mason Taylor caught two touchdowns. Geno Smith, who began his career in this very building, tied his season high with three touchdown passes. Across from them, 38-year-old Kirk Cousins flies east for a 1:00 body-clock kickoff behind an interior line with both D.J. Glaze and Jackson Powers-Johnson questionable, against a Jets front that lives in backfields. The Raiders have lost four straight, and yes, the names on that schedule were terrifying , Kansas City, New England, Buffalo, the Rams — but the last time we checked, October doesn't award style points and neither does the standings page.
The warnings, because this is the Jets and warnings are legally required. Breece Hall is questionable with a quad, and if he's out the backfield thins fast. Maxx Crosby against a tackle room with Max Mitchell dinged up is the single scariest sentence in this preview. Las Vegas is 5-2 against the spread, the public is hammering them, Cousins has a 16-to-5 touchdown-to-interception line piloting the league's fourth-best passing yardage attack, and the Jets' ball-hawking secondary has produced exactly one interception all season. Aaron Glenn's team has turned losing close games into performance art. All true. And still, the better defense, at home, laying a point and a half, against a defense that lets everybody score.
