Chicago +3½ -110 over Philadelphia
8:15 PM EST. If there was ever a week when nobody wants the Chicago Bears, this is probably it. They just produced three points in an offensive performance that was difficult to watch, and now Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring injury. Backup Tyson Bagent is questionable with a concussion, which means 38-year-old Case Keenum could actually be taking snaps Monday night. Meanwhile, Philadelphia is 2-0. Put those two pictures side-by-side and asking Chicago to cover anything sounds borderline insane. That's precisely why we're interested.
The market has obviously adjusted for Williams' absence, but quarterback injuries—particularly to recognizable starters—have a tendency to create an emotional adjustment on top of the mathematical one. Williams wasn't exactly carrying this offense on his back against Philadelphia last season. He completed fewer than half his passes in Chicago's 24-15 win, while D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai shredded the Eagles for 255 combined rushing yards. Williams' mobility certainly contributed to the defensive stress, but Chicago's path in this matchup remains the same: run the football, shorten the game, protect whoever is playing quarterback and force Philadelphia to earn everything.
There are reasons to believe the Bears can do exactly that. Philadelphia allowed Tennessee to average 4.2 yards per carry last week, and its defense was plagued by missed tackles. That isn't what you want to see before facing the same running game that embarrassed you a year ago. Vic Fangio can say the defensive preparation won't change regardless of whether Bagent or Keenum starts, but Chicago doesn't need its backup quarterback throwing it 40 times. If the Bears can consistently stay out of third-and-long, the downgrade at quarterback becomes considerably less damaging than the market perception suggests.
Philadelphia isn't arriving without problems of its own. The offensive line is being reshuffled after losing Landon Dickerson, with Cam Jurgens moving to left guard and Drew Kendall stepping in at center. Dallas Goedert is out, Saquon Barkley is coming off a stinger, and Zach Ertz could be pressed into action after being signed to the practice squad following last year's ACL injury. The Eagles escaped Tennessee 24-20 last week, so we're not dealing with a team that has been steamrolling opponents and suddenly gets handed an easy layup.
And that's really the point here. Almost everything surrounding this game encourages bettors to lay the points with Philadelphia. Eagles 2-0. Bears coming off a three-point disaster. Caleb Williams out. Backup quarterback questionable. Possibly Case Keenum. It's an absolutely hideous betting ticket on Chicago, while Philadelphia feels like the comfortable and obvious side. Comfortable and obvious doesn't automatically mean correctly priced.
The Bears also don't have to turn this into a quarterback duel with Jalen Hurts. This has all the ingredients of a lower-possession, grind-it-out game. Chicago can lean on its running game, Philadelphia has offensive-line and skill-position issues of its own, and the Eagles haven't shown enough defensively to make laying road points particularly appealing. The uglier this game becomes, the more valuable those 3½ points become.
We're not trying to argue that losing Caleb Williams somehow makes Chicago better. It doesn't. We're arguing that the price has changed more than our assessment of the matchup has. Chicago already demonstrated last season that its running game can cause serious problems for this Philadelphia defense, and the Eagles enter this rematch with enough vulnerabilities of their own that we're not interested in paying a premium simply because the Bears' quarterback situation looks awful.
This is precisely the type of game where the betting public sees a backup quarterback and immediately crosses one team off the list. We'll gladly take the other side of that reaction.
