8:15 PM ET. Last season, Cincinnati out-gained Denver by 170 yards, picked up 15 more first downs, and still had to sweat out overtime after the Broncos tied it with eight seconds left. That’s Denver football in a nutshell: hang around, get bailed out late, and pad the final score to look respectable.

The Bengals will turn to Jake Browning here, and we’re fine with that. His “audition” last week in Minnesota wasn’t an audition at all. Cincinnati was buried by multiple scores before the game even settled, allowing the Vikings’ pass rush to tee off on every snap. That wasn’t football. That was survival. Browning is more capable than the market gives him credit for.

Cincinnati’s problem isn’t Browning. It’s the roster construction. Burrow, Chase, Higgins, and Trey Hendrickson account for 41.3% of this year’s salary cap, the highest concentration in the league by a wide margin. When you allocate that much to four players, there are going to be holes. Some weeks those holes are exposed. Other weeks, talent carries the day.

This week, though, it’s about the opponent. The Broncos are spotting over a converted touchdown with a rookie quarterback in Bo Nix who has done nothing to suggest he can cash this ticket. Denver’s offense is clunky, vanilla, and turnover-prone. Until Nix shows otherwise, the Broncos can’t be trusted to create margin against anybody, let alone against a Bengals side that still has game-changing playmakers on both sides of the ball.
