Notre Dame -7½ -110 over Miami

7:30 PM EST. There are times when you just have to play the number, and this is one of those times. How can Notre Dame be a seven-and-a-half-point favorite over Miami? Miami is 8-0, they haven't lost a game all year, they're 4-0 on the road, they're 5-3 against the spread, they're the No. 1 team in the country, and now they're being offered seven and a half big points. The oddsmakers could have made this seven and not swayed a single bet, but they put a hook on an extremely key number like seven, and that's a telling tale you can't ignore. When the books hang a hook on seven against an undefeated No. 1 team, they're not being generous. They're begging you to take Miami, and they're begging loud enough that you can hear it from South Bend.

The news this week only pushed the number further. Miami's best weapon, receiver Malachi Toney, went down in practice on Wednesday with a high ankle sprain, and he's having surgery. He's out at least a month, done for the regular season, back only if the Canes make the playoff. The line ran from five and a half to seven and a half on the news, and that's fine, but let's not overreact to it, because the part that matters is who didn't get hurt. Darian Mensah is still the quarterback, he's still standing back there dealing, and Miami's offense is still loaded without Toney. The injury explains the move. It doesn't make the number wrong, and it doesn't change the fact that the hook is still sitting there, daring the whole country to take the points with the undefeated team.

And the whole country will. That's the other half of this. The public sees the record, the ranking, and the names, and Miami has all of them. Notre Dame has CJ Carr and a supporting cast that reads like a trivia question. The leading receiver came over from the lacrosse team. The running backs are a sophomore and a freshman replacing two first-round draft picks. Nobody's buying a Notre Dame jersey for the supporting cast, and that's exactly the point. The market prices names and reputations. The number prices the game. Carr is the one his coaches talk about like he's the second coming, the guy who gets them in the right play every single time and doesn't beat himself, and he's going against a Miami defense that just needed 38 points to escape Chapel Hill. You don't need stars around a quarterback like that. You need the number.

Saturday night, South Bend, NBC, the No. 1 team in the country getting more than a touchdown. The public will take the points and the unbeaten record and feel smart doing it. We'll take the hook, the home team, and the quarterback who doesn't turn it over.
