Vanderbilt +25½ -110 over Georgia
12:45 PM EST. College football has changed, and we're not sure the market has completely adjusted to just how much. There was a time when Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan could collect five-star recruits like baseball cards. If a blue-chip kid wasn't ready to start, no problem—stick him on the second or third team for a year or two and wait. NIL and the transfer portal have changed that landscape dramatically. Elite players who aren't playing can get paid and play somewhere else. The very best programs still have enormous recruiting advantages, but stockpiling an absurd amount of talent three-deep isn't nearly as easy as it once was.
Georgia was one of the programs that benefited most from the old model. Kirby Smart could lose NFL players and replace them with former five-stars who had been waiting their turn. The Bulldogs remain loaded, but we're not automatically assigning this version of Georgia the same dominance as the great Georgia teams simply because the helmet looks the same. They're 4-0 against the spread, they're destroying everything in front of them and everybody is falling all over themselves to proclaim the Bulldogs an unstoppable machine. You'll have to excuse us while we crap in our pants in awe of Georgia beating four cupcakes. Their stock couldn't possibly be much higher.
That's really what we're betting against here. Georgia may very well be the best team in the country, but the market isn't offering September prices anymore. It's charging full freight after four straight covers and a 41-13 demolition of Oklahoma. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, just lost at Auburn and now brings a true freshman quarterback into Athens. One side looks absolutely terrifying and the other looks like something nobody wants any part of. That's how we arrive at 24½ points. Jared Curtis has at least been thrown directly into the fire, going 22-of-33 at Auburn while also leading Vanderbilt in rushing, and Clark Lea has every reason to slow this game to a crawl and make Georgia earn every possession.
If you lay the points with Georgia, you might cash your ticket. They could be every bit as good as advertised and win this thing by 35. But understand what you're buying: you're extremely late to the Bulldogs ticket-cashing party. The value was in backing Georgia before four consecutive covers sent its stock through the roof, not after everyone decided they're Secretariat. Vanderbilt doesn't have to be remotely as good as Georgia. It has to shorten the game, avoid getting buried immediately and stay inside a number that has been inflated by a month of Bulldog destruction.
