Washington -1½ +185 over Detroit

6:40 PM EST. DJ Herz (LHP- WSH, 4.24 ERA) faces River Ryan (RHP- DET, 4.39 ERA), with both pitchers coming back into major-league action after extended rehabs. Herz has completed seven rehab outings and struck out 19 over 18 innings, while his most recent Rochester appearance covered 4.1 innings and 65 pitches. That is important because Washington is not putting a fully stretched-out starter on the mound; this is essentially an extended audition followed by the Nationals' bullpen taking over. The current rehab numbers are useful, but the workload limitation is the bigger factor in evaluating this matchup.

Ryan has a similar problem from the Detroit side. His 2026 minor-league work covered 41 innings with 40 strikeouts, but he has only been stretched to 2.2 innings in his most recent outing. His two September rehab appearances produced four strikeouts across 4.2 innings, so there is some current swing-and-miss ability here, but there is nowhere near a normal starter's workload behind it. FanGraphs' current data also shows Ryan's underlying projection around 7.4 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9, with a 4.87 FIP, which hardly screams automatic shut-down performance.

We are not buying a traditional starting-pitcher advantage because there isn't one. We are betting on the second half of the game, where Washington can turn this into a bullpen-versus-bullpen contest after both starters have been restricted. Detroit is also dealing with a pitcher making his team debut, while Washington has already seen Herz work through several controlled appearances. There is much less certainty surrounding the Detroit side than the ordinary ERA comparison suggests.

This is exactly the kind of September game where the price matters more than the pretty little matchup chart. Both clubs are playing out the string, neither starter is being asked to carry a normal workload, and Washington is available at a number that gives us considerably more upside than simply taking the Nationals on the moneyline. We don't need Herz to suddenly pitch like a Cy Young candidate. We need Washington to take advantage of a Detroit starter who is unlikely to be asked to go deep and then win the bullpen portion of the evening. At this price, that is the ticket we want.
