7:40 PM EST. Martín Pérez (LHP- ATL, 3.08 ERA) gets the ball for Atlanta against Kevin Gausman (RHP- CHC, 4.60 ERA) of Chicago. Pérez has done a good job of keeping the scoreboard under control, but his underlying numbers show a pitcher more dependent on contact management than strikeout dominance. He has 98 strikeouts in 131.2 innings, translating to roughly 6.7 K/9, with 3.8 BB/9. His 4.59 xERA and 4.17 FIP sit considerably higher than the ERA, so the advantage here comes from the matchup and price rather than treating Pérez as an overpowering arm.

Gausman brings the much stronger bat-missing profile, with 171 strikeouts over 166.1 innings, good for roughly 9.3 K/9, against a manageable 2.6 BB/9. The problem for Chicago is the run prevention. Gausman's 4.60 ERA comes with a 1.29 WHIP, while his expected numbers are better but still nowhere near dominant, with his xERA around the high-3.00s and FIP around the upper-3.00s. The underlying profile says Gausman remains capable of missing bats, but Atlanta is facing a pitcher who has allowed considerably more traffic than his strikeout numbers might suggest. The recent form makes this a much more interesting matchup than the names suggest. Gausman has shown flashes of his old swing-and-miss ability, including a recent seven-inning outing against Milwaukee in which he struck out nine and allowed just one run. That is exactly why the Cubs are going to attract money here. We are not interested in paying for the best version of Gausman when his overall 2026 run prevention remains ordinary. Pérez, meanwhile, has demonstrated an ability to work through lineups without giving away the big inning, and his recent start against Tampa Bay produced seven scoreless innings with four strikeouts. This is a classic plus-money situation where the better wager is not necessarily attached to the more recognizable pitcher. Atlanta has the left-handed Pérez keeping Chicago's lineup from settling into a comfortable rhythm, while Gausman's elevated ERA and WHIP leave the Cubs vulnerable to a few well-timed rallies. The Braves don't need Pérez to dominate; they need him to keep the game controlled long enough for Atlanta's offense and bullpen to make the difference.
