Texas +120 over Arizona

4:10 PM EST. Cal Quantrill (RHP- TEX, 2.89 ERA) takes the mound for Texas against Eduardo Rodriguez (LHP- ARI, 2.55 ERA) of Arizona. On the surface, Rodriguez owns the lower ERA, but Quantrill has been pitching much better lately and has quietly put together one of his strongest stretches of the season. Over his last five starts, he has a 2.90 ERA with a 4.62 xFIP, a 0.82 WHIP and 8.3 K/9, while his recent control has been excellent. His full-season profile shows a 6.75 K/9 and 2.19 BB/9, giving him a dependable combination of strike throwing and limiting free baserunners.

Rodriguez has certainly earned respect, but his underlying numbers don't suggest the type of overwhelming matchup his ERA might imply. He has a 2.55 ERA through 173 innings, yet his FIP sits at 3.74, while his strikeout rate remains modest at 6.66 K/9 against 2.97 BB/9. The 2.25 K/BB ratio is considerably less impressive than the surface ERA, and the gap between his run prevention and the supporting indicators gives Texas an opportunity to attack a pitcher whose margin for error isn't nearly as large as the ERA suggests.

The matchup also favors Texas because Quantrill is coming into this game in considerably better recent form than the basic season numbers indicate. He has allowed only three earned runs over his last six innings and has now delivered five consecutive quality starts, with a 28-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio across that recent five-start stretch. Texas doesn't need to dominate Arizona from the opening pitch; it needs to make the Diamondbacks earn every run while taking advantage of Rodriguez's less dominant strikeout profile.
