Ben Ashcraft has been respectable this season, but his underlying profile is far less convincing. Ashcraft has also issued more free passes than Abbott, carrying a BB/9 north of 3.0, and his inability to consistently miss bats has left him dependent on batted-ball luck. Against a Cincinnati lineup that has become more disciplined at the plate, that's a dangerous combination.

The Reds hold the edge because they possess the more reliable starter and the better swing-and-miss profile. Abbott has consistently demonstrated the ability to control the strike zone, while Cincinnati's offense has enough athleticism and patience to pressure opposing pitchers throughout the game. The Pirates have scuffled offensively in recent weeks, and facing a left-hander with Abbott's strikeout arsenal only magnifies those issues.
