Pittsburgh -1½ +150 over Houston
8:10 PM EST. Jared Jones (RHP – PIT) is making just his second start of the season, and anyone glancing at the box scores will immediately notice the ugly 10.38 ERA. That's exactly why we're interested. Surface numbers tell one story, but the underlying metrics tell another. Jones was far better than the results suggest in his first outing, posting an expected ERA of 3.17 while showing the same electric arsenal that made him one of baseball's most exciting young pitchers. This is a pitcher with legitimate swing-and-miss stuff, a power fastball, and a wipeout slider that can dominate lineups when he's locating. The talent level here is far greater than his current ERA would suggest.
Jones was overshadowed somewhat by Paul Skenes during Pittsburgh's youth movement, but that shouldn't diminish what he accomplished. Before injuries interrupted his rookie campaign, he established himself as a key piece of the Pirates' future rotation. The strikeout ability has never been in question. The next step is refining a third pitch and staying healthy. If that happens, the ceiling remains extremely high. We are buying into the skills, not the misleading early-season results.
Kai-Wei Teng (RHP – HOU) has his own upside, but there are still major concerns. Control has been a recurring issue throughout his professional career, and that's a dangerous flaw against a Pittsburgh lineup that has shown improved patience and discipline. Teng's strikeout potential is real, but so is the risk that free passes and deep counts create opportunities for the Pirates to do damage. His major league track record remains shaky, and he's still trying to establish himself as a reliable starter at this level.
The bigger story here is the matchup between two teams heading in opposite directions. Pittsburgh continues to build around an emerging young core and has been playing with confidence, while Houston is relying on a pitcher whose biggest weakness remains command. Jones is substantially better than his ERA suggests, and the market appears to be focusing on that inflated number instead of the actual performance. At a generous plus price on the run line, we'll take the Pirates to win by margin behind one of the most talented young arms in the National League.
