Fresno St. +6½ -110 over Boise St.
10:30 PM EST. Boise State is once again everybody's favorite Group of Five darling, and the Broncos are already being fitted for their College Football Playoff tuxedos. There's just one small inconvenience standing between Boise and its postseason coronation: a trip to Fresno to face a Bulldogs team that has been playing some outstanding football.
Fresno State opened the season with a humiliating 39-0 loss at USC, and that result has stuck to the Bulldogs like a bad smell. But judging this team by that performance would be a serious mistake. Quarterback Jayden Mandal was making his first collegiate start against the Trojans, and the experience was predictably ugly. Since then, Fresno has won four straight, Mandal hasn't thrown an interception, and the Bulldogs have developed into a considerably more dangerous opponent than the one that stumbled out of the gate.
The real story, however, is Fresno's defense. During its four-game winning streak, the Bulldogs have surrendered fewer than 11 points per game. This is an experienced, physical unit that doesn't give opponents much room to operate, and it represents a significant challenge for a Boise offense accustomed to moving the football almost at will. Fresno is allowing just 16.4 points per game overall, which is particularly impressive considering how badly things went against USC.
Boise deserves respect, but respect and laying nearly a touchdown on the road are two different matters. The Broncos have been winning, but they haven't exactly been burying everybody in their path. South Dakota gave them considerably more resistance than expected, and Utah State hung around last week despite entering as a substantial underdog. Those performances suggest Boise might be getting priced more on its national reputation than on what it's actually delivering.
There's also the matter of last year's meeting, when Fresno embarrassed Boise 30-7 on the Broncos' famous blue turf. Yes, Boise lost starting quarterback Maddux Madsen early in that game, and his absence certainly mattered. He's healthy now and playing excellent football, but the market seems determined to treat that as sufficient justification for making the Broncos a sizable road favorite. Fresno's defense might have something to say about that.
The one injury worth monitoring is Bulldogs running back Rayshon Luke, who left last week's game against Washington State with a concussion. His availability matters, but Fresno's improvement extends well beyond one player. This line originally opened around Boise -9½ before bettors quickly pushed it toward -5½. That early movement was telling. Even after the number climbed back to -6½, the underlying argument hasn't changed: Fresno is a much better team than its opening-week embarrassment suggests, while Boise continues to command a premium because of its name and playoff aspirations.
The Broncos might be the more celebrated program, but Fresno is playing the kind of defense that can make this a miserable afternoon for a highly regarded visitor. The Bulldogs have more than enough to win this game outright, and getting 6½ points at home is a price worth grabbing.
