The Golden Griffins are among the lowest rated teams in KenPon (361st overall) and are nearly 40 positions lower than the Lakers, and yet they are the chalk here. Dating back to last season, Mercyhurst have covered in four straight games and they are 2-1 on the year. Canisius? 1-2, splitting two 20-point spreads to get a .500 record against the spread. The Golden Griffins have not even beaten a Division I team yet this season and went 3-28 in their previous campaign. We ask again, why are they favored?

This is a fundamental “playing numbers and not teams” angle. We read the line and infer what it is trying to tell us. The Lakers despite hanging around at Northwestern, beating Loyola Chicago on the road outright as a 21.5-point underdog, and following that up with a smashing of D2 Allegheny College are not trusted to beat the Golden Griffins of all teams? That cannot be. But we’re listening nonetheless.

Our philosophies are rooted in backing the side no one wants and getting onboard with the team that no one gives a chance. The market may feel that way sure, but the price tells us that the Griffins are in position to make the most of this assignment. The best part is, all we have to do is back Canisius to win because their stock is so low.
