Wright State +14½ over California

9:00 PM ET. California rolled a weak Cal State Bakersfield team on opening night, and now the market’s acting like that performance proves anything about who they are. The Bears brought in four new transfer starters and are still figuring out how to play together. They looked fine in transition, but that’s not going to be the game flow here.

Wright State is a legit mid-major with continuity and physicality. They won their opener by nearly 50 points, sure, against a D-III opponent, but what stood out was how they played — 27 assists, 18 offensive boards, and relentless effort from everyone who stepped on the floor. That’s the kind of profile you want catching double digits early in the year against a Power Conference team that’s still blending parts.

Cal’s assist number (20) looked great on paper, but let’s remember they averaged just 10 a game last season — one of the worst marks in the country. They played loose because Bakersfield gave them no resistance. Wright State isn’t that soft. The Raiders rebound, they defend, and they make you earn every possession. They’ll slow the tempo, grind the glass, and turn this into a half-court game that makes 15 points feel like a mountain.

The market is reacting to the Pippen name, the home opener, and a shiny scoreline. We’re reacting to the fact that Cal’s chemistry is still a work in progress and that Wright State’s system under Clint Sargent travels well. This one projects to be far more competitive than the number suggests.
