Hamilton +5½ -110 over Montreal

7:30 PM EST. Here's another one where we're apparently supposed to look at the records, nod intelligently and bet Montreal. The Alouettes are 10-3. Hamilton is 4-9 and has lost three straight. Montreal has already beaten Hamilton twice this season. Bo Levi Mitchell is gone, Harrison Frost is starting at quarterback, and Montreal has one of the most productive passing attacks in the league. Okay. So why the fuck is Montreal only -5½? If everything is as obvious as it appears, shouldn't the Alouettes be laying seven? Eight? Maybe more? Instead, we're being offered Montreal at a very manageable number against a team nobody wants anything to do with.

And that's precisely why Hamilton interests us. Think about the guy walking into the sportsbook tonight. Montreal 10-3 or Hamilton 4-9? Davis Alexander or Harrison Frost? Montreal already beat Hamilton twice or Hamilton trying to avoid getting swept? This isn't exactly Sophie's Choice. Almost every recognizable piece of information points directly toward Montreal, and bookmakers somehow forgot to make bettors pay dearly for it. They're practically inviting you to lay 5½ with the vastly superior team. Whenever the betting window starts looking like it's giving away free money, we start checking whether our wallet is still in our pocket.

There's another piece of this that matters. Montreal just got hammered 48-29 by B.C., so now we're also going to hear about the inevitable "bounce-back." Great team gets embarrassed, great team gets angry, great team takes it out on inferior opponent. It's one of gambling's favorite bedtime stories. Meanwhile Hamilton has been sitting around for two weeks after losing 37-22 to Toronto, and absolutely nobody is talking about the Ticats because there isn't anything sexy to talk about. That's fine with us. We're not buying jerseys. We're buying numbers. Montreal's résumé is dramatically better, its quarterback is dramatically better and its record is dramatically better—yet all that superiority costs only 5½ points. Maybe the number is telling us something the standings aren't.

We're certainly not going to waste anybody's time with ancient series records, weekday ATS trends or some nonsense about what happened when these teams met three years ago. Montreal has already beaten Hamilton twice this season, and that's enough to make the Alouettes even easier to bet for the third meeting. We want the team nobody wants, at home, coming off a bye, catching 5½ points against an opponent that looks infinitely better on paper. Sometimes ugly is exactly what we're shopping for. Give us Hamilton +5½ and let everybody else line up to bet the 10-3 team against the 4-9 team because, really, what could possibly go wrong?
